Underground Tank Removal Typically, specialized machinery is utilized to conduct an underground oil tank removal. The size of the excavation normally extends 2' in each direction past the ends of the tank. A 550-gallon tank measures 48" in diameter and is 5'5" long. A 1,000-gallon tank measures 48" in diameter and is 10'9" long.
After gaining access to the top of the tank, it is cut large enough to have a Tank Masters field technician fit inside. The tank is then emptied and all the contents are either transferred into a new tank on-site, or disposed of at a licensed waste disposal facility.
Prior to the tank being removed, the local inspector will inspect the interior of the tank for any possible leaks, and to ensure it has been properly cleaned. After the tank has been properly cleaned and the inspector has completed the inspection, the tanks void is then filled with clean fill.
Aboveground Tank Removal Typically, aboveground storage tanks are either placed inside or outside of the home. The top of the tank is cut large enough to have a field technician fit inside of the tank. The tank is then emptied and all the contents from the tank are transferred into a new tank on site, or disposed of at a licensed waste disposal facility.
In the event that oil is transferred to a new tank, you should still anticipate having to dispose of some waste, as the tanks bottom contains heavy sludge. After the tank has been thoroughly cleaned, we remove and dispose of the sludge. If we have limited access and cannot remove the tank in one piece, we cut it into manageable pieces and legally dispose of it. We then concrete patch or foam fill the holes in the building from either the fill, vent, or oil lines.
